The effects of pain, brokenness, and sin have been part of human existence since the third chapter of the Bible. The City Church values care and godly counsel, and finds it helpful to think about these needs through two different lenses:
Care for Each Other
We believe that God has designed the local church body in such a familial way that many needs can be met by other family members: since the earliest days of the Church in the book of Acts, Christians are devoted not only to God, but to each other: to meet needs, to speak truth in love, and to care as much about each others’ growth and welfare as we each care about our own.
For this reason, the first step in “counseling” or “shepherding” may not look like going to a pastor or professional counselor, but to your brothers and sisters within your City Group. The purpose of City Groups is to come alongside, ask questions of, care for, shepherd, speak truth to one another, and help each other find comfort in God in every area of life. As Spirit-empowered members of God’s family we have been given many of the tools necessary to help each other, even in times of great struggle and pain.
While much care and counsel occurs in the context of City Groups, there are some needs that go beyond a City Group’s capacity or experience to serve well. To that end, some City Church elders, alongside some recommended local professional counseling organizations, are available for more formal counseling needs.
You’re welcome to approach an elder, or to fill out the confidential form below, to initiate a counseling request. Our elders can generally only provide counsel for partners of The City Church and those regularly involved with our family. Occasionally, financial assistance is available for professional counseling, for City Church partners only.
